Effects of alcohol during pregnancy
Fetal alcohol syndrome has no cure. But prevention works in 100% of cases. That is, not drinking alcohol during pregnancy reduces to zero the chance that the baby is born with a syndrome that affects Galicia one thousand newborns at different levels.
Emphasize the importance of this disease, so unknown compared to others, for example Down syndrome, is the goal of the first association that was created in Spain, which currently has around thirty members of different communities autonomous. SFAE (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Spain) in Galicia comes from the hand of Iago and Eva Martínez Patiño.
The first one has a 25 year old son affected by this disease and ensure that the objective of the association is “report because the information is the cure of the SFA.” In Spain there are hardly any studies on this disease so that the statistics “are real but unofficial. There is a protocol to diagnose, “says Patil. In fact, estimates of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in the United States (NOFAS) is that in Spain affects one in every thousand babies born, a fact on the other side more positive than the U.S. figures, where the proportion drops to one in every 750.
A couple of weeks, Brewers of Spain, the Spanish Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and the Department of Sanidade launched a campaign to publicize the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, which distributed leaflets in public and private nutritional advice and discouraging alcohol completely during pregnancy. There are no studies that demonstrate below how much alcohol there is no risk to the fetus, as advocated by the president of the Galician Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Javier Martínez, “it is best not to consume any alcohol”.
Two drinks a week increases the risk of spontaneous abortion by 50%. In the late sixties, a French doctor described this syndrome, a complex disease characterized by intellectual impairment, behavioral disturbances, upper lip very broad, short eyelids, smaller eyes and a great chance of suffering from heart malformations and articulated, although the effects may appear in very different degrees. Women who drink three to six drinks a day have a chance that your child has this syndrome between 30 and 50%, but with a consumption of two drinks a week and there is a risk that appears.
Objectives of the Association
The association, which was launched last October and also has its own Facebook group, I intend to show a disease virtually unknown and insist that contrary to what happens in other diseases, in this case Prevention works in 100% of cases. In addition, Patiño insists diagnosis, vital to implement an appropriate protocol, and in his own treatment, and the sooner you apply best results are obtained in the welfare and child development.
Patiño faced this problem in their own flesh to adopt Jon, a child with Down syndrome who is now 25 years. “If my son was good at a time, with many improvements, but from age began to wane, because it is a disease without cure.”
