Treatment of Insomnia with Medicinal Plants I
Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum).
Mostly used in traditional Chinese medicine, reishi calm the person during the day, reduces anxiety and muscle spasms, helps to overcome the distractions and regulates sugar metabolism.
Has also been shown to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, strengthens the heart and stimulates the immune system. The health effects of this fungus have been found in numerous studies.
Dosage: Three capsules of 1 gram three times daily. So far, experimental studies show that reishi can be used safely, although there are few data on long-term use.
It has been used as a sleep aid for centuries. The volatile oils of nuts have a significant sedative. An infusion of hops can be taken to relieve stress during the day or just before bed or a small pillow can be filled with their inflorescences, so that their fragrance is released every time you turn your head.
Dosage: Use one teaspoon of whole hops for each cup of boiling water to make tea.
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis).
It is another widely used remedy for insomnia throughout history. While it helps to induce sleep, habituation may occur, higher doses being needed each time. Therefore, it is recommended to take only short periods (up to a month) or occasionally, in times of severe insomnia. Valerian depresses the central nervous system. It is also antibacterial and anti-diuretic and lowers blood pressure.
Dose: 300 to 400 mg. product with 0.5 percent essential oil, one hour before bedtime. Pregnant women should not use it.
Or Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora).
It was used by nineteenth century physicians to treat pain in muscles, ligaments and tendons. Its soothing action is mainly due to its antispasmodic action.
Dose: You can use this herb combined with reishi, hops and valerian alone, as liquid tincture, 15 to 40 drops two or three times a day. Its leaves can also be used to fill the pillow.
